Bright Chimezie, the veteran Nigerian highlife singer, has expressed his delight over Davido’s new song ‘With You’ which features Omah Lay.
In a video shared on his Instagram page, the 64-year-old singer danced to ‘With You’ before praising Davido and Omah Lay for the song, which samples his 2010 hit record ‘Because of English’.
“You can see I am vibing to the song already. It’s a beautiful piece of work, very wonderful,” he said.
“I appreciate the fact that you said you picked the inspiration from this song I recorded many years ago; I appreciate you for that.”
Chimezie also posted a video of Davido on a video call with him, where the ‘Unavailable’ hitmaker explained the creative connection between the two songs.
“The latest hit I just did with Omah Lay, I used inspiration from your song, ‘Because of English’,” he said.
“I told them to play it for you. It’s trending everywhere, the whole world. I’m still around, so maybe we get you to come to Lagos, so we can meet. It will be nice. Make sure you listen to the song tonight. God bless you, sir.”

Davido’s verse in ‘With You’ — “If I speak English, oh-oh, Cho-cho-cho, no working, I no wan punish, woah, woah. I want to punish you, idiarabanko” — bears a striking resemblance to Chimezie’s original lyrics, almost sounding like a clever reinterpretation or homage to the veteran’s iconic lines.
‘With You’ is a track from Davido’s 2025 album ‘5ive’. ‘Because of English,’ on the other hand, first appeared on YouTube in 2010, but streaming platforms like Apple Music and Boomplay listed its release year as 2018.
Chimezie, who rose to fame in the 1980s, is known for his music style called the Zigima Sound, a distinctive fusion of traditional Nigerian music, Igbo highlife, and chanted vocals that set his style apart.
In a career spanning over four decades, he has released several notable songs, including ‘Ube Nwanne’, ‘Because of English’, ‘Respect Africa’, and ‘African Style’.
