Abeokuta’s MKO Abiola Stadium came alive on Sunday evening as Davido and Bukola ‘Asa’ Elemide delivered electrifying performances to launch this year’s National Sports Festival.

The ceremony, tagged Gateway Games, began on a stirring note as Asa, renowned for her soulful vocals, delivered a breathtaking rendition of the Nigerian national anthem, captivating the audience with her powerful and emotive performance.

Her opening set the perfect tone for an evening celebrating sports, culture, and unity.

Taking the stage next, Davido brought his signature high-energy performance, thrilling the crowd with hit after hit.

His dynamic stage presence and infectious energy had the entire stadium on its feet, turning the event into a massive celebration.

Ademola Adeleke, the governor of Osun, known for his love of dance, couldn’t resist dancing, especially during his nephew Davido’s performance.

The governor’s spirited dance moves became an instant highlight of the night, earning cheers and applause from the delighted spectators.

The festival officially kicked off on Friday with the arrival of athletes from participating states.

Early competitions in weightlifting and kung fu set the stage for the action-packed sporting event which will run until May 30.

Dapo Abiodun, governor of Ogun, was joined by Adeleke, Wale Edun, finance minister, and other dignitaries for the opening ceremony.

Bukola Olopade, director general of the National Sports Commission (NSC), also teased that more exciting activities are lined up but kept details under wraps.

“I have spent the last two years saying Ogun state will host the best Festival, but doubters never believed. Beyond this aesthetics that you are seeing here today, which confirms to everyone what I have said earlier on from the opening ceremony,” he said.

“…beyond that, this is the first national sports festival ever that the first two days will be rancour free from hotel and feeding. So I am excited. I know the content of what is going to happen here.

“I can reveal a bit. Like Davido will be closing it up and Asa will be starting it. I will not tell you the in-between. You need to be in the stadium or glued to your television to enjoy what is coming out of Abeokuta. We are very proud as it is.”
